Tips for booking your flight:

1. Book flights with flexible change policies. When you’re a traveler, your schedule can be unpredictable. Look for airlines that offer flexible change policies so you can easily adjust your flight if needed.

2. Take advantage of airline loyalty programs. Many airlines offer loyalty programs that can be beneficial for frequent travelers. These programs can often offer discounts on flights as well as other perks such as priority boarding.

3. Book your flights in advance. Traveling healthcare workers should always try to book their flights at least a couple of weeks in advance to get the best deals. Booking flights at the last minute can be expensive, so it’s best to plan ahead.

4. Apply for TSA precheck. One of the best air travel tips is to apply for TSA precheck. It is a huge time saver and will make your airline experience so much more comfortable. We will note there is usually a small fee associated with prechecks, but we think it’s totally worth it.

5. Invest in travel insurance. Travel insurance is a great way to protect yourself in the event of an emergency or unforeseen circumstances and be a money saver in the long run.

Packing Tips:

6. Pack light, overpacking can be a real hassle, especially as a travel healthcare worker. Try to only bring what you need and leave the rest at home. This will save time and energy at the airport.

7. Use TSA guidelines to help you know the regulations for packing certain items.

    • Liquids, gels, and aerosols packed in carry-on must follow the 3-1-1 liquids rule:
    • 4 ounces or less per container
    • 1 quart size, clear plastic, zip-top bag (all liquids must fit in bag)
    • 1 bag per passenger
    • Review the prohibited item list for both carry-on and checked baggage.
    • If purchasing a baggage lock, be sure to look for those that are TSA-recognized.
    • Tape a card with your name and contact information to your electronics.

Tips for the airport:

8. Get to the airport early. When you are flying for assignments, it is important to get to the airport early. This way, you can make sure that you have enough time to check in, go through security, and make it to your gate. Even if you opt for a TSA precheck, nobody likes the feeling of being rushed, so it’s always best to be early in these situations.

9. Take advantage of services such as airport lounges. Airport lounges can be a great way to relax and enjoy a few amenities before a flight. These lounges often offer free Wi-Fi, snacks, drinks, and other services that can make the airport experience much more enjoyable.

10. Make sure that you are prepared. Ensure that all your devices are fully charged, you have brought along some forms of entertainment, snacks, important documents, and most importantly, that you are dressed comfortably.

There’s no denying why so many travelers opt to fly to their destinations: the time saved on driving alone is tremendous! Navigating through airports can be overwhelming, but with these tips we are sure your next flight will be a breeze.
