Gastroenterology Technician

Job Description

Position Summary

Supports gastroenterology clinics and procedures by preparing patients and equipment, assisting providers during diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, and maintaining infection control and equipment reprocessing standards.

Education and Experience

High school diploma. Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program (national, state, or military equivalent) with a current certificate. Equivalency determinations are not permitted. Minimum of one year of experience within the past 36 months in a medical setting; prior gastroenterology experience preferred.

Certifications

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification is recommended. All certifications must be through the American Heart Association or American Red Cross and maintained at no cost to the Government.

Licensure

None required.

Contract Worker Standard Qualifications

·       Ensure availability and proper setup of instruments, equipment, and supplies for gastroenterology procedures.

·       Assist physicians and registered nurses during diagnostic, therapeutic, and emergency GI procedures.

·       Prepare clean fields and perform equipment setup for procedures including EGD, colonoscopy, ERCP, pH testing, capsule endoscopy, paracentesis, manometry, liver biopsy, and PEG placement.

·       Perform high‑level disinfection (HLD) of endoscopes following manufacturer instructions and Joint Commission standards.

·       Handle, label, and transport specimens according to infection control and pathology requirements.

·       Escort, transport, and position patients safely using wheelchairs, gurneys, and procedure tables.

·       Obtain, record, and document vital signs and physiological measurements in the electronic medical record.

·       Assist with patient recovery following GI procedures and identify post‑procedural complications.

·       Maintain equipment functionality, inventory control, and supply readiness.

·       Comply with safety, infection control, privacy, and ethical standards at all times.

·       Participate in department training, competency verification, quality initiatives, and medical readiness activities.
