Job Description
Position Summary
Provides specialty gastroenterology and hepatology care to adult and geriatric patients, delivering comprehensive diagnostic, treatment, and follow-up services in collaboration with supervising physicians.
Education and Experience
Master’s degree in Nursing. Graduate from an accredited Adult, Internal Medicine, or Family Nurse Practitioner program recognized by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). Preference given to candidates with at least 12 months of gastroenterology-specific clinical experience.
Certifications
Must be certified as an Adult, Internal Medicine, or Family Nurse Practitioner by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), or other recognized national certification body. Must also hold and maintain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association or American Red Cross. Certifications must be maintained at no cost to the Government.
Licensure
Must hold and maintain a current, full, active, and unrestricted Nurse Practitioner license to practice in any U.S. state, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory.
Contract Worker Standard Qualifications
· Provide a full range of specialty gastroenterology and hepatology patient care services within the scope of clinical privileges granted by the Medical Treatment Facility (MTF).
· Conduct comprehensive patient assessments, including medical history, physical examination, and diagnostic interpretation.
· Diagnose and manage acute and chronic gastrointestinal conditions in accordance with established protocols and clinical practice guidelines.
· Order, perform, and interpret laboratory, radiologic, and diagnostic studies related to gastroenterology care.
· Perform and assist with gastroenterology procedures including but not limited to capsule endoscopy, esophageal manometry, pH studies, FibroScan, and paracentesis as privileged.
· Provide medical advice via telephone consultations and document encounters in the electronic health record.
· Prescribe medications and treatments in accordance with approved Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee protocols.
· Coordinate patient care with physicians, nursing staff, and other specialty services to ensure continuity of care.
· Educate patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, procedures, and follow-up requirements.
· Recognize emergent conditions and initiate appropriate interventions within scope of practice until physician support is available.
· Document all clinical encounters accurately and timely in electronic medical records.
· Participate in staff meetings, peer review, quality improvement initiatives, and medical readiness activities.
· Adhere to Medical Staff Bylaws, ethical standards, infection control policies, and all MTF guidelines.
