Role Description

Certified nurse practitioners performing responsibilities that require an advanced level of certification and/or license as a Certified Nurse Practitioner. Must be fully autonomous.

Provides total health care to inmates (routine, chronic and emergency care), maintaining continuity of care from admission to discharge. It ensures safe medication administration and providing health services in accordance with Department of Corrections (DOC) policy, American Correctional Association (ACA) standards of care, and ensures operational policies and procedures are followed. To function as a medical health provider to the inmates by performing initial and ongoing medical assessments, prescribing appropriate medication and/or mechanical measures to assist inmates with their medical needs, and assisting with preparation/modification of medical treatment plans. Assignments to other duties or locations may be necessary to meet the clinical and administrative needs of the Department.

Complexity

  • Scope of work includes performing physical examinations and preventive health measures, ordering and performing diagnostic procedures, and prescribing controlled substances and devices in accordance with current regulations.
  • Contacts are made with patients in the provision of care and more limited contact with physicians for their consultation.

Results

  • The limited availability of physician oversight increases the consequence of error.
  • Work significantly affects the health of patients due to higher level of independence.

Accountability

  • Performs work under limited access to a physician or works in an environment where physician availability is typically limited.
  • Works independently with minimal supervision providing diagnosis and treatment according to protocol.

Compensation:

  • Local – $87/HR
